Toile de Jouy

Toile is high quality printing on cotton. Introduced in the 1770s, it was first produced with plates and later on with rollers.Manufactuered into the 1840s, toile cottons are monochromatic but with high definition and innovatingly for their time they are colorfast.This example features groups of musicians in a pastoral setting and judging by its width dates to the 19th century.
