Shiva Lingam (19th Century)
This Shiva lingam is from India and is from the 19th century, or possibly even older. It is made from stone.
The lingam or linga is a Hindu religious symbol that represents the deity Shiva, specifically his generative capabilities. This sort of lingam is made out of stone, usually a hard stone placed in a river that will naturally erode it into the desired smooth, cylindrical shape.
Rocks found in nature that already take this shape are prized as naturally occurring lingam, with more spiritual significance than human-made lingam, because they are said to have been created at the beginning of time.
