Rarotongan Fan (Ta’iri)
Using the uncurled fiber from the coconut palm and a shell, natives of the Cook Islands would create these stunning fans. The shell is polished and the palm fibers are woven to make beautiful patterns. These fans used to be made using a carved wooden handle, but the shell is a more recent technique. The fine details of this piece imply it would have been used for formal occasions.
