Paithani Brocade Shawl Fragment (Ashavali)
This fragment from a Paithani brocade shawl or ashavali was made in 19th century India. It is made out of linen with a brocaded center field bordered on the top and bottom with a pallav of interpenetrating dovetailed tapestry. The design features multi borders of florals. This type of work was produced in Paithan near Aurangabad, Maharashtra in North India.
