Jacquard woven wool shawl with a narrow floral border and an empty red field.The jacquard loom, invented in 1801, simplified the process of weaving textiles with complex patterns.The loom is controlled by punch cards with punched holes, each row of which corresponds to one row of the design. Multiple row of holes are punched on each card and the many cards that compose the design of the textile are strung together in order.
