Mola Cloth

A mola panel with a large bird motif. The Cuna Indians of Panama developed this unique type of applique, done mostly in small rectangles that were used as frontpieces on their blouses. Originally molas were made in few colors and simple abstracted designs, one fabric superimposed on the other and the upper one cut and sewn down. Later versions get more intricate, using more colors and complex designs.
