Ikat Songket Sumatra
A beautiful songket limar from Palembang, Sumatra. The field is worked in a very high-quality weft ikat technique. Weft ikat patterning is very challenging as the threads of the weft need to be continuously aligned by hand to the register. The songket work, which is the gold brocading, is of secondary importance, while the tops of the stupas along the narrow borders get embroidered detailing.
For a similar limar patterning see “Floating Threads, Indonesian Songket, and Similar Weaving Traditions” By Judi Achjadi, page 83
