Greek Islands Composite
Composites like this were made from scraps of older embroideries and usually the center bigger piece is of later date. In this example the center piece is from an altogether different culture as it seems to be from central Asia or Italy. The borders, from 5 different pieces vary in age with the older pieces around the edge. Going from the outside towards the center, the fragments are from Macedonia, Rhodes and Attica, each one of different texture and graphics. The embroidery fragments used tend to be of the most recent vintage in the center while the older pieces are found around the edges. Variety of colors, center is very stylised with pink(red) green, white, green and black, elsewhere mostly earth tones, reds, browns, green, beige and white.
