Grassland Tunic
Cameroon Grassland tunic- embroidered robes were and are worn by nobles and elders and others of high rank and wealth during ceremonies and festivals. Black cotton with red, yellow and white wool hand embroidery. The use of this elaborate embroidery became popular in the 19th century, possibly due to the influence of the Hausa traders who traveled throughout the region. The designs however are usually local in origin, such as the reptile shape on this example along with large cruciform shapes.
