Embroidered Panel
Panel of Ottoman embroidery. The very high and consistent quality of handwork suggests that it was produced in a professional workshop as furnishing material, most often seen on festive women s coats. Alternating rows of meandering floral vines and sprigs, embroidered with polychrome silk and metallic thread in chain stitch onto a linen foundation that is previously stamped with the design. There is some splicing of smaller pieces around the side borders but the main panel at center is selvedge to selvedge and measures 49″ x 18.5″.
