Embroidered Lady’s Purse Pouch
This small pouch would have been used by a woman to carry money or other small items. It is adorned with cross stitch embroidery featuring images of the “Hundred Antiques.” Some prominent symbols are a bronze tripod, books, a dish of flowers, a jade stone, coral, and writing instruments. Like most Chinese motifs these symbols all have a special meaning such as beauty, harmony, longevity, and knowledge, which will be passed on to the user of the purse.
There are three small pockets in this piece, one in the center and two underneath the flaps on each side. It can be held using the thin silk handle, and has a tassel hanging from the bottom.
