Castello Branco Coverlet
Castello Branco embroideries have been produced by a small factory run by nuns. Usually these embroideries take the form of bedspreads; a large center medallion with wide borders all filled with figures, flowers, coats of arms, birds.Sometime the design is dominated by a large tree of life. The motifs are based on Indo- Portuguese embroideries from north west India, particularly Goa which was a Portuguese colony. The hand work is executed with floss silk in long stitches that are loosely couched and this results in large reflective areas of colors. The color palette is lighter and the drawing less sophisticated than the influencing Indian work. This bedspread features parrots in center medallion and four corners.
