Brocade Yardage for Military Jacket
Thailand (or Siam) has never been colonized, nevertheless its style was greatly influenced by the British colonialists of its next door neighbor Burma. Court uniforms were modeled on contemporaneous British officer garb starting in the late 18th century during the rule of Rama I.The local twist was the fabric used – catering to Thai taste with opulent brocades, first imported from Varanasi, India and later made in Thailand. This example is made in India and featuring the typical dense brocade diamond grid filled with flowers, against a dark maroon satin silk. For a similar example made into royal jacket see” Silken Threads Lacquer Thrones, Lan Na Court Textiles” by Susan Conway, Page142. Also see TX4092 in our inventory for a later example.
