Shibori Kimono (Arashi)
This Japanese yukata is dyed using the shibori technique. Yukata are worn by women during the summer months due to their thin, breathable quality. They are typically made of cotton.
Tie-dying, or “shibori,” dates back to the eighth century in Japan. Shibori uses the plant-based indigo dye. This piece is dyed using the arashi technique, where the fabric is diagonally wrapped around a pole and tightly bound with string. The fabric would then be scrunched to create pleats, and dyed.
