Banig Fiber Yardage
The exact origin of Banig isn’t known, but it has been woven long before the arrival of the Spanish. They were created as sleeping or sitting mats, and the techniques were passed down from generation to generation. Strips of leaves from local plants (rattan, palms, and reeds) were cut into strips, dried, dyed, and folded over each other to create geometric patterns.
This piece uses strips of off-white, blue, black, green, red, and yellow to create an almost pixelated pattern. There is about 8 yards to this piece – both long edges are finished and the shorter edges are not.
