Wool Weave Mat
The Berber weaving techniques of Algeria were similar to their Tunisian and Moroccan counterparts. However, while the weaving traditions of Morocco and Tunisia are thriving, Algerian Berber weaving no longer exists due to political instability and modernism.
This small wool mat is from Mzab valley in southwest Algeria, and it is the handiwork of women. Central white field framed against the red background, all ornamented with diamonds, triangles and other linear elements reminiscent of Tunisian designs. Woven in tapestry technique with supplementary embroidered details.
