Thanjavur Bobble Dancer

The Thanjavur doll comes from Chennai, Tamil Nadu in India. The craft dates back to the early 19th century. They were made by hand using paper mache, metal wire, and paint. The doll easily comes apart into four sections – the head, torso, skirt, and legs/stand. Each section balances on top of the other on specifically shaped metal wires, and dances when moved.

This doll wears a draped green saree with an orange top, decorated with jewelry and a bindi.
