Brocaded Huipil Panel
This panel is one of two or three that would have comprised a huipil, or blouse, for a Guatemalan woman. The colorful, geometric pattern was produced, while weaving, in the form of supplementary wefts. The technique seen here is known as single-faced brocade and only shows on one side of the red cotton ground. The village in which a huipil was made can often be determined by its design. Motifs on this panel, particularly the multicolored zig-zags, dots and lattices, are characteristic of San Antonio Aguas Calientes.
