Tetouan Mirror Cover
1492 was the year when the entire Jewish and Muslim population was evicted from Spain. Many of them settled in Morocco, bringing their artistic traditions with them. Tetouan was established at that time, being in a close location to Spain. During the Ottoman rule, there was also a wave of migration of Muslims from Algeria. Thus Tetouan embroidery combines elements of Hispano-Mouresque, Algerian, and Ottoman styles.
This mirror cover (tenifa) particular to Tetouan is a long, embroidered panel that is used to drape over mirrors during weddings and celebrations to ward off the evil eye. It is executed from freehand drawings made directly on fabric. The handwork is done in silk in satin stitch and double darning stitch. Polychrome colors in a warm, vibrant, and robust palette.Saturated yellow satin ground. Motifs of summer florals, serrated leaves, and geometric shapes. It is also embellished with a gold taped border.
