Currency Sphere
This Papua New Guinea Shell sphere is made by the Tolai people on the island of New Britain. This piece is referred to as a Tabu and was used as currency in New Britain. It is comprised of overlapping circles made of hundreds of small cowrie shells all sewn onto a basketry foundation.
This piece is mounted on a metal base.
