Printed Kerchief

In the 19th century, machines took the place of individual skilled weavers and block printers, lowering the cost of textiles and making it increasingly more difficult for handmade and expensive Indian textiles to compete. English companies such as the East India Company began fine printing designs that catered to the Indian market as well as other far eastern markets.

This cotton kerchief has various floral, circular, and abstract red and brown designs roller printed on to a beige base. It is in fair condition with small holes as shown in the photos, and is stabilized with cotton backing.
