Double Sided Philippine Head Cloth
The Yakan are an indigenous tribe in the Philippines. The people are by origin from the Sulu Archipelago in the southernmost region of the country. The Yakan people are recognized for their remarkable Technicolor geometric weaves.
In the 1970’s Yakan people relocated to the Mindanao mainland after political upheavals drove them away. Today Yakan people live peacefully in Zamboanga city.
Headscarf or “Yakan Pis” geometric pattern intricate weave worn to cover the hair on a daily basis. Yakan weaving uses bright, bold contrasting colors in large symmetrical patterns. Inspired by colorful island life and Islamic sacred geometry. Women use backstrap weaving techniques which keeps the weaving tradition alive today.
