Ottoman Embroidered Cover

Ottoman art came into closer contact with Europe in the middle of the 19thc and was affected by the European living style and developing industrialization. The industries of Europe in an attempt to expand their total markets, not only imposed new products on their own population but also promoted the idea of specialized products to a broader world market.

Turkey fell subject to these ideas, and there was a disappearance of other products suited to a simpler life. The Turkish bocha lost its original purpose as a wrapper and was supplemented by multi-purpose covers.

During social meetings, it was essential that refreshments be served. Covers exist which are decorated for such suitable occasions. Covers were used as tea tray covers, over fruit under place settings and hand towels for touching the fingers.  Each cover embroidered with appropriate motifs.
