Black and Gold Obi

20th century Japanese woven silk brocade sash. Abstract design with black ground flanked by exquisite idealized gold cloud formations. Originally used in the Kubuki in a thinner belt style, as the obi became wider by wearers it became fashionable with the populace. The obi represents politeness and elegance.
